Can Astrology Pick a Winner in MMA?

Why Is Everyone Obsessed with MMA Astrology?
Newspapers have printed a daily horoscope since August 24th, 1930, and for almost a century now we have consumed this daily column, some of us passively, some religiously. When Walter Mercado came around in 70’s he introduced astrology to an even wider audience, creating a wave of interest in star signs, and what they meant for you. Whether you believe in them or not, they are as embedded in our culture now as reality TV and leggings as pants. Recently the resurgence of interest in the practice has also included exploring full natal charts and understanding how it actually works vs just reading your daily horoscope. This could be applied to MMA Astrology.
To put it as simply as possible, when you are born, based on the planets and stars’ positions looking up from where you are at that exact moment, that is your natal chart. Your Aspects are how these planets’ energies interact based on where they are geometrical to one another. That already sounds complicated, I get it, so here is a cheat sheet for what all of it means.
Now, what on earth does this have to do with MMA? As it turns out, you can utilize a fighter’s full natal chart and calculate the transitioning planets to look for any Aspects that might affect their performance. I know, it sounds absurd, but honestly isn’t every great thing seemingly absurd and otherworldly (pun intended) when it’s first discovered? Last week I ran a little experiment and managed to correctly guess a wild 3-way parlay for Brunson, Maia, and Luque. Now we are at trial number 2, testing the waters (or space, if you will) once again to see who the stars favor in this week’s Main Card!
Sun and Mercury in Leo; Moon, Mars, and Chiron in Aries
The first thing we need to understand is what the astrological positions are that day if we only compare natal charts, we are only seeing half a picture. Nobody feels the same every single day with no variation in mood, that’s how the transitioning planets interact with your natal placements. Right away we see a lot of fire activity that day, and in areas that are particularly important when looking at a fighter’s chart for how they will do in the cage. So now we compare this information, in an astrological Aspect battle.
I’ll break down the specifics for my top 3 Astro battles, and give you the straight-up picks for the rest of the main card.
Derrick Lewis vs Aleksei Olenik
Derrick Lewis
His Sun in Aquarius and Mars in Aries explains his personality right off the bat for me. He’s a bit eccentric, very confident, inclined to take risks but can also be a bit dramatic and not quite there for the fight. On Saturday the Transitioning Sun will be in opposition to his Natal Sun, polarizing that energy and creating a stressful time, Leo season can be a tough time for an Air sign like Lewis, but thankfully he has a lot of other fire and earth placements to ease this.
Other Notable Aspects and Planets: Transitioning Mercury opposition Natal Mercury- Thinking and communication increased, greater energy for family and friends. Saturn in Scorpio- Subconscious fears may inhibit success, despite eagerness for success in a tangible way.
Aleksei Olenik
A-Sun in Cancer and Moon in Libra tell us the story of a potentially moody but overall go with the flow guy, someone who’s been around the block a couple of times. A Saturn in Leo gives us an analytical and serious-minded individual, who takes great care of their body, perhaps a concern or anxiety over the natural aging process, and wants to maintain their younger and stronger physique. This is only exemplified by the Transitioning Sun being conjunct his Natal Saturn, showing that hardship can pay off handsomely and seeing some ego assertion as well.
Other Notable Aspects and Planets: Mercury Sextile Natal Moon- new possibilities may arrive, success involving a project perhaps.
My Pick: I would say the Stars favor Olenik here.
Chris Weidman vs Omari Akhmedov
Omari Akhmedov
His Natal Libra Sun is trine his Natal Gemini Moon, giving us an individual who can likely accomplish anything he puts his mind to, with Gemini Moon hinting at a versatile but high-strung person. The Transitioning Sun will be sextile his natal Sun, Fire, and Air working together, one feeding the other in this steady stream of positive fulfilling energy.
Other Notable Aspects and Planets: Transitioning Mercury conjunct Natal Ascendant- physical vitality and creative expression are affected positively, and mental processing is at its peak.
Chris Weidman
We have another airy individual here, with a Sun, Mercury, Venus, North Node, and Chiron all in Gemini. That is a lot of Gemini. He’s likely to be very logical but also restless, prone to anxiety, overcompensating that with competitiveness, and rebellious nature. His moon however is in Aquarius, and square his Natal Mars which we can infer to show someone who is easily affected by emotional conditions. The Transitioning Sun will be sextile Natal Mercury making his mental power at peak and giving him fruitful exchanges.
Other Notable Aspects and Planets: Natal Mars conjunct Natal Jupiter- inhibited by subconscious fear, potentially overcompensating with domination.
My Pick: This one is hard, but I would say the stars favor Akhmedov more.
Lastly my absolute favorite matchup of the night- Coconut Bombs and The Dentist. I mean just for the nicknames this is a great match-up.
Maki Pitolo vs Darren Stewart
Maki Pitolo
Sun in Sagittarius, an optimistic, logical, and keen-witted personality aided by a Rising Leo; he is bound to be dramatic and assertive and determined to get what he wants. On Saturday Transitioning Mercury will be sextile his Natal Mars, making him conscious of his ego needs and thinking of his goals for the future.
Other Notable Aspects and Planets: Mars in Gemini- ambitious, vigorous, persistent to the point of tunnel vision.
Darren Stewart
A Capricorn man he is incredibly ambitious, hardworking, and a slow and steady ladder climber until he’s at the top. His Mercury is also in Sagittarius, so he may be a bit impatient, and lacking in concentration but otherwise alert and keen-witted. The Transitioning Sun will be sextile his Natal Mercury making his mental power and dexterity at their peak, and implying some fruitful (coconut-ful?) exchanges.
Other Notable Planets and Aspects: Natal Sun square Natal Ascendant- strong-willed and dramatic personality. Assertive and courageous; willing to take risks.
My Pick: What’s interesting about this matchup is that the two were born only a month apart and on opposites sides of the world and have a lot of similar placements such as in the North Node, Chiron, Jupiter, and Saturn. And honestly, I’m gonna call it right now- I think this is gonna be the fight of the night. But as much as my heart wants Coconut Bombs to win, I think the Stars favor The Dentist.
The Stars also appear to favor Julija Stoliarenko, and Scott Holtzman for their fights, respectively.
Is That All the MMA Astrology Stars Have To Say?
Honestly, who knows if this is right or wrong, I believe 4 out of the 5 picks were underdogs, but to be honest last week 2 of my 4 picks were underdogs and I hit an unbelievable 3-way parlay.
The stars favor Olenik and Stewart the most, and if you wanna play it safe and see if these Astro shenanigans works, I would do a 2-way parlay there. I have full faith in my wild musings and so I’m playing a 5-way parlay on all of the picks. But also a separate one for the 2 way parlay and a straight-up bet for Olenik.
Overall though, this Saturday is looking to be a great night for fights. And remember, these picks are just for fun, and based solely on their astrology, not on previous fight records or style. So take it with a grain of salt. However, if these picks DO hit… well I’ll gladly take the position as your new Queen of Astrology.
