Army of the Dead Review
Zack Snyder returns to his roots with an action-packed, gory zombie flick that hits hard but cowers in retaliation while being an enjoyable experience.
Of course, everyone loves a zombie movie, but this is undoubtedly not Dawn of the Dead. Arguably, it’s a mix of Shaun Of The Dead with a hint of Planet Of The Apes. It’s got gore, guns, a lot of zombies, and a lil’ bit of comedy. But, most impressively was the diversity of the cast.
Big ol’ Dave Bautista being some God with an AR, a jacked but scared German, Omari Hardwick being…well…Jamie St. Patrick and some extra’s that make you root for the rag-tag group of mercenaries looking to score big on one last heist.
Wait, a heist doesn’t make sense during a zombie pandemic. Army Of The Dead does something rather unique – from personal experience – that only Las Vegas is where the Zombie outbreak is and contained.
What’s more interesting is the zombies. They’re not your typical undead as we usually know, but they’ve got an “Alpha” and a “Queen,” which have some form of thought and sentience. They’ve turned Vegas into an Undead City, which is pretty damn fun.
Film Expectations
Don’t go into Army of the Dead expecting to be blown away but do expect to be entertained. The visual effects are brilliant minus the odd frames of CGI that look very obvious (especially Chris D’Elia’s now-CGI replaced character), and some of the models look ‘off’ to say the least. Audibly though, the highly impressive zombie groans’n’moans were top tier. Gunshots sounded high-grade, as did explosions which good speakers amplified.
Overall, it’s a fun, entertaining movie, enough to shut your brain off and enjoy. A shallow story picked up by an exciting and unique world.
Zack Snyder returned to the genre with some new flesh to bite on – overall, I’d recommend it to anyone who likes fun and damn good death sequences, definitely not scary and is much more an action-comedy than anything.
Film Score: 7.5/10
