(Opinion) Attack On Titan Deserved a Better Ending

Manga fans will remember Attack on Titan as one of the all-time greats. The impact this franchise has had worldwide can not be ignored and brought in many new fans to the mediums of anime and manga.
The ending of the Manga of Attack of Titan was polarizing. It doesn’t feel right to see such an excellent manga end on such a low note.
Before we begin, their significant spoilers about the Attack on Titan manga, and several other stories below.
Attack on Titan Code Geass and The Zero Requiem
The ending of Attack on Titan is very similar to the conclusion of the anime Code Geass, but there are key differences. First, the culmination of Code Geass was built from day one, and most importantly, it was earned.
The Zero Requiem was Lelouch’s plan to concentrate the hatred of the world towards himself and have Zero (Suzaku) kill him and finally end the war and for that to begin an era of peace for the world. Lelouch’s sacrifice was to atone for his sins and to bring a peaceful world for his sister.
As you can see, the AoT manga ending is very similar, but it doesn’t work. The first thing, Eren’s motivations were because of love, except this was never hinted at it during the entire story. Eren’s love for Mikasa comes out of nowhere, and it ignores that their passion is fraternal and not romantic.
Zero killing the Tyrant Emperor Lelouch was meant as a symbol of freedom giving people hope. Plus, starting an era of peace in the world. Armin being the one to “kill” Eren to provide him with credit doesn’t have the same result as Lelouch and Suzaku, especially considering at the end, Eren is still celebrated as a hero despite killing 80% of humanity because of the rumbling.
Ymir and The Source of All Living Matter
Ymir and her introduction to the final parts of the manga didn’t help the story much. It felt as times that Isayama (the author) didn’t know what to do with her throughout the manga’s final stretch.
Ymir being in love with Karl Fritz was one of the significant problems with her story. Seeing Mikasa killing Eren was what ultimately makes her relinquish the power of the titans from the world.
The Source of all living matter was the origin of the titans’ power, and the show’s creators never expanded it. Once Ymir relinquished the titans’ control from the world, the source just vanished without any explanation.
The source is one of the essential parts of the franchise, and the fact it was never expanded upon just being there and vanishing is a significant letdown.
Eren & Mikasa or School Days 2.0
As mentioned before, Mikasa and Eren never had a romantic tone. It was fraternal love. But the fact Attack on Titan changed this to Eren being in love with Mikasa made no sense. Mainly because it was previously never mentioned.
Eren and Mikasa’s romance was just an excuse for connecting the bizarre love Ymir had with Fritz. The ending was all about the power of love.
Mikasa and the infamous panel of her kissing Eren’s severed head reminded many people of School Days’ controversial ending. Still, at least Kotonoha and Makoto had were shown to had felt to one another, unlike Eren and Mikasa.
The final panels of Eren presumably reincarnating as a bird ( a very subtle reference to Eren and freedom)Â and adjusting Mikasa’s scarf was the blandest way to end such a great story.
Watch Attack On Titan and see for yourself.
